At Hibaldstow Academy we follow the objectives for Handwriting from the Primary Literacy Strategy Presentation Strand. The Penpals handwriting scheme is also being used to support the teaching of handwriting.

Subject Aims and Objectives:

For all children to produce neat, fluent, legible handwriting with correctly formed letters.

The handwriting style which has been adopted includes the use of capital letters, letter formation and joins and should be taught explicitly, following the progression chart from the Penpals scheme. The effectiveness of this scheme will be reviewed after one year.

Children in the Foundation Stage learn to write basic print for the first half term, with an introduction to "tails" on some letters and the cursive style taught once the children reach Year 1. There is great emphasis on forming the letters in the correct way, with straight backs on ascenders and descenders.


Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing the ability to calculate, to communicate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and patterns in numbers in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics.

At Hibaldstow Academy we aim to:

  • promote enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning through practical activity, exploration and discussion
  • develop mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts in line with The Primary Framework recommendations;
  • promote confidence and competence with numbers and the number system
  • develop the ability to solve problems through decision-making and reasoning in a range of contexts
  • develop a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered and presented
  • explore features of shape and space, and develop measuring skills in a range of contexts
  • develop an appreciation of the creative aspects of maths and awareness of its aesthetic appeal
  • understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
